[Feb. 27th, 2007|07:43 pm] |
Hey there folks! I've been so busy with work I wasn't able to post the Top 40 last week, but you can view it by clicking on the main page (see link below) via Loudcity, and hitting "Previous."
So this past week shows Bloc Party holding onto the top spot with "The Prayer". They may have trouble holding on, as this week we are adding another track "I Still Remember" from their stellar album "A Weekend in the City." | Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame |
[Jan. 8th, 2007|01:11 pm] |
| [ | music |
| | www.bluespaceradio.com | ] |

All I can say is: it's about damn time. The latest inductees to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame were announced today, and FINALLY Patti Smith is getting her due! She will be inducted alongside R.E.M., Van Halen, The Ronettes, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. All are deserving, as far as I'm concerned - but especially Patti Smith, who is one of the most celebrated and influential figures of rock to come out of the 70's.
Woo-hoo!! Kudos to Patti and the other inductees. |

| Happy Birthday, Mr. Bowie |
[Jan. 8th, 2007|08:51 am] |
| [ | music |
| | www.bluespaceradio.com | ] |

Arguably the greatest trailblazer in rock history turns 60 years young today. I can't really emphasize enough how important David Bowie has been in so many different areas of popular music. Year after year after year, great song after great song, classic album after classic album, the man truly has done it all. Never afraid to follow where his curiosity was taking him, sometimes his experiments worked, and sometimes they didn't... but he was very rarely boring in the process. We are fortunate that Bowie is still around and still going strong - not many rock legends are making as music as vital today as at any time in their career. But listen to Bowie's most recent work "Reality", "Heathen", "Hours", even going back to "Outside" and "Earthling" and its clear that Bowie is still at the top of his game.
For me personally, Bowie was a huge influence on my love of music. I first really became aware of David Bowie during the early years of MTV, with videos like "China Girl", "Let's Dance", "DJ" and of course "Ashes to Ashes." My uncle - the one with the huge vinyl record collection - let me borrow "Aladdin Sane" and "Diamond Dogs", and it was all over for me. A life-long love of Bowie began in earnest. Since then I've eagerly bought his entire back catalogue and played it through and through, backwards and forwards. Every time he puts out a new release, I feel like it's a celebration. Some songs are better than others, and sometimes my appreciation for certain albums and songs rises and falls... I'll go through periods where nothing beats "Aladdin Sane", only to recognize the genius of "Low" or even "Outside" and think that THIS has to be his peak. But Bowie has had many peaks, and one of his most important accomplishments is inspiring countless other artists that I love and revere.
So happy birthday Mr. Bowie, and let's hope he keeps making incredible music for a very, very long time! We ALWAYS feature David Bowie heavily on the Bluespace playlist of course, but this week, in celebration of his birthday, we will throw in some extra Bowie nuggets. Some hits, some obscurities, some fan favorites, and some tracks you may not have heard before. Hope you enjoy it! |

Several debuts this week, including the remarkable new single by Arcade Fire, "Intervention." The "Neon Bible" CD is due this Spring. Also debuting is the 2nd track by Dangerous Muse to make our Top 10. Following-up on "Give Me Danger," the latest is "The Rejection", and again it's a fantastic electro-pop song with a great retro vibe to it. The brand new Art Brut single "Nag Nag Nag Nag" is another debut, and I have a feeling we are going to be hearing alot of this song... It's one that sticks in your head and doesn't let go.

| HAPPY NEW YEAR! |
[Dec. 29th, 2006|09:15 am] |

Hello folks! Want to wish everyone a happy new year, and thanks for listening and for your support. We started Bluespace Radio this past summer not really knowing what to expect, and the response has been incredibly positive. I've worked very hard putting together playlists that mix both the old a new, popular and obscure, new wave and almost-new wave, so that it's always interesting and ever changing. The coolest thing is getting feedback and seeing that folks actually enjoy the music, and want it to continue! In 2007 we'll continue to work hard to improve Bluespace. I don't have as much time as I would like to write content for the website - most of my time is focused on the music, and on doing the playlists - but hopefully that will change in 2007. Our hope is also to get others involved, which would help a great deal.
I would like to note that at the top of the page at www.bluespaceradio.com is a link for making donations. Bluespace is free for the listener, but it does cost us quite a bit of $$$ to run, and any assistance with that would be fantastic. If you like Bluespace and have a few extra bucks from time to time to contribute to keep it going, please feel free :->
Thanks again for listening, and please keep emails coming. It's great hearing from you. bluespaceradio@yahoo.com.
All the best, - Chris

| BEST ALBUMS OF 2006 |
[Dec. 26th, 2006|09:56 am] |
| [ | music |
| | www.bluespaceradio.com | ] | It's that time of year again... time to look back and discuss the best releases of 2006. Here are my picks... not all are things we play on Bluespace. I do listen to other stuff besides New Wave and related genres :->

1. Modern Times – Bob Dylan Continues his late-career renaissance with writing as good as anything he's ever done. Timeless.

2. The Diaries of Private Henry Hill – Blow Up Hollywood For me this will be the most vivid and important album inspired by the Iraq war. Based on diaries of a soldier tragically killed in Iraq, the album traces his development from naive enlistee to numb and confused soldier who has no clue what he is fighting for. Amazingly powerful.

3. Rather Ripped - Sonic Youth Possibly my favorite Sonic Youth album. Some of the best tunes they have ever written. Worth it just for "Do You Believe in Rapture?"

4. Fear is on Our Side - I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness Dense and hard to penetrate. Would not have been out of place in the post-punk era alongside bands like Joy Division/early New Order, Section 25, A Certain Ratio, Wire, etc. Also harkens back somewhat to My Bloody Valentine. "According to Plan" is one of the most hypnotic rock tracks you'll ever hear.

5. Living with War – Neil Young A sad album for a sad war. It's a last gasp from a prior generation, wondering why the current generation failed to learn anything from history. Neil let it burst out raw and immediate, and it's a messy affair - as is the norm with Neil - and he wears his heart on his sleeve, and it's not particularly artful..... but it has real feeling and passion.

6. Fundamental – Pet Shop Boys Razor-sharp as ever. "Fundamental" has some of the PSB's best tunes since early-90's classics "Behavior" and "Very." Trevor Horn's production shines, especially on "Minimal.'

7. Powder Burns – The Twilight Singers Drug-addled and anguished. Greg Dulli - formerly of Afghan Whigs - has never been written more powerfully. It's a shame so few seem to be noticing, as the Twilight Singers seem to operate mostly in the shadows.

8. Thunderbird – Cassandra Wilson Sumptuous and gorgeous as ever. Cassandra has the kind of voice that taps right into your soul and doesn't leave.

9. The Captain and the Kid – Elton John The much older and wiser sequel to "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy". Not going for pop artifice, it's all about looking back over a long career as it winds to its close. Elton can be so clownish in his public persona, it's a surprise sometimes how great he can be when he really puts his mind to it.

10. In Bocca al Lupo – Murder by Death A sorta demented netherworld occupied by the likes of Tom Waits and Nick Cave. Best listened to in the dark.

11. Highway Companion – Tom Petty One of the comeback albums of the year. Solid throughout, "Highway Companion" made it clear that Tom Petty still has a place in rock 'n' roll in 2006 as a wizened elder-statesman.

12. The Eraser – Thom Yorke Thom York sits at his laptop and emits some gurgles, bleeps, and blips... and it's all so beautiful.

13. Nine Times that Same Song – Love is All Post-punk revival. Not particularly unique, just damn good. Romeo Void meets X-Ray Spex meets Yeah Yeah Yeahs... a bridge between 1980 and 2006, and it rocks.

14. 3121 – Prince The man is a genius but so fucking frustrating. Brilliant moments alongside lackadaisacal tripe, but even his most throwaway moments are better than 99% of anything played on pop radio.

15. Everything All The Time – Band of Horses Gorgeous songwriting, melancholy and sentimental. Great driving music. Reminds me of my trip to Cape Cod this year. We listened to it in the car, along with Grace Jones and Avenged Sevenfold. Fun trip!!

16. Sam’s Town – The Killers Bombastic and wonderfully over-the-top. "When You Were Young" is one of the best pure pop pleasures of the year.

17. The Flaming Lips – At War with the Mystics A woeful disappointment after the brilliance of "Yoshimi", but still a great record. Space-rock, suitable for zoning out into the stratosphere.

18. Give Me a Wall - Forward Russia Demented new wave revivalists with great songs that go off in all sorts of different and odd directions. Not sure why they had the gimmick of all song titles being numbers, but I don't mind... 'Thirteen' is the best of the bunch.

19. I’m Not Dead - Pink Great pop/rock album. Pink is so much ballsier than her contemporaries. I saw her live at the 930 club in DC, and it was basically a rock show. She's an amazing performer and vocalist. I think she'll be around for a long, long time.

20. Under the Influence of Giants (self-titled) "In the Clouds" is the most insanely singable song of the year, and it just won't leave my skull. But I don't mind very much 8-)

| RIP AHMET ERTEGUN |
[Dec. 15th, 2006|12:58 pm] |

Legendary Atlantic Records boss Ahment Ertegun has died at age 83. He was probably the greatest record executive in rock history. The list of artists he signed is like a who's-who of great rock and R&B. It's the end of an era, without question.

Last night, VH1 Classic aired the legendary concert film "Urgh! A Music War", and I was in New Wave/Post-Punk geek heaven. Thank God for TiVo (best invention ever!), as this amazing film will likely never see the light of day on DVD. "Urgh! A Music War" was a concert film released in 1981 and it featured fantastic live performances by bands like The Police, XTC, Oingo Boingo, 999, Magazine, OMD, Au Pairs, and many more. There was a double album soundtrack also released. If you ever have a chance to see it, PLEASE DO - it's a great snapshot of some of the best post-punk music from the early 80's. Hopefully Vh1 will show it again, because it deserves to be seen.
The tracklisting of the film is below. We're going to feature some of these tracks on Bluespace Radio this week, so keep listening! :->

| | WWW.bluespaceradio.com | ] | Does anybody remember the British comedy series "The Young Ones"?

Someone reminded me of it today when they listed the DVD on their amazon.com wish-list. I thought it was HILARIOUS when I was a kid. So freakin' funny. The character Neil (played by Nigel Planer) had a #2 hit in the UK with his cover of Traffic's "Hole in my Shoe", and it spawned a full album. Very fun take on the song. As far as I'm aware, it's never been issued on CD... I think it was vinyl only, but I could be wrong about that. Anyways, we have it on If you don't know how to do them they are easy: bluespace radio - - - I'll be throwing it on the playlist from time to time. Listen for it, ya'll! Cool stuff.

| THE SOUND |

The Sound… great band. They were late 70/early 80’s post-punk. Think along the lines of Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, Chamelons, Comsat Angels, etc. They had a very stark and stripped-down sound.
The Sound broke up in the late 80’s and lead singer and lyricist Adrian Borden continued his career with other bands and with solo recordings. He sadly committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a subway train in London in 1999.
All of the Sounds' CDs are all available on www.amazon.com/uk, and I would definitely recommend either "Jeopardy" or "From the Lion's Mouth."

| 10-9-8...... |
[Nov. 3rd, 2006|03:01 pm] |

Anybody remember the 1984 single "10-9-8" by Face to Face? It was a minor Top 40 hit for the one-hit-wonder led by Laurie Sargent. Well, for all you obscure 80's afficianados, Face to Face's debut album is getting a CD reissue on 11/21/06, with a couple bonus tracks including the Dance Remix of "10-9-8" that we have played on Bluespace Radio several times. The album is definitely an interesting 80's artifact, and I will be curious to check out the reissue.
Tracklist:
Out Of My Hands All Because Of You Face In Front Of Mine Pictures Of You Over The Edge Under The Gun 10-9-8 Don't Talk Like That Heaven On Earth Wreckless Heart
Bonus Tracks 10-9-8 (Dance Mix) Under The Gun (Dance Mix)

| Another U2 compilation |
[Nov. 3rd, 2006|02:55 pm] |

11/21/06 - U2 will unleash a single disc retrospective called "U218 Singles", which will include 2 tracks. The collection is aimed at the casual fan looking for just the biggest hits, but they manage to come up with a way to reel in die-hard fans with the addition of the new material. Depeche Mode is playing a similar trick, and The Cure did the same thing a few years back. Nice. At least The Cure's compilation was made worthwhile by the inclusion of a bonus disc of all-new acoustic recordings of the singles. Perhaps U2 should have followed their lead.
